International Youth Day, 2023 Celebrated at GCW Udhampur

To mark the celebration of International Youth Day, 2023, a series of events including a motivational talk, a poster making competition, an awareness rally and a plantation drive was organized in Government College for Women Udhampur by Red Ribbon Club under the convenorship of Dr. Kewal Kumar on August 13,2023. In the morning session a motivational lecture on the theme, “Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World” was delivered by Dr. Kewal Kumar, Convenor Red Ribbon Club. The lecture was attended by about 112 students including staff of the college. In his talk he first explained the meaning of Green skills and why they are important for sustainable world which is the theme of this year. He said, Green skills also called Skills for sustainability are the technical skills, knowledge, values and attitudes needed in the workforce to develop and support sustainable social, economic and environmental outcomes in business, industry and the community. While discussing the 17 sustainable development Goals (SDGs), he told that the shift towards an environmentally sustainable and climate-friendly world is critical not only for responding to the global climate crisis but also for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). After motivational lecture, a poster making competition on the topic, Green Skills to conserve the environment was organized. In poster making competition about 29 students participated and made beautiful posters on the given theme. Dr. Seema Sharma, HOD Music, Dr. Sanjeet Kour, HOD Zoology and Prof. Ashni Devi, HOD Botany were the jury members. On the basis of judgement of jury members, Miss Samreeti Thkur of Sem-V, Miss Shagun of Sem-V and Miss Pragnaya of Sem -V were adjudged 1st, 2nd and 3rd position respectively while Miss Priyanjka Sharma of Sem-V, Miss Shivali Samyal of Sem-V and Miss Sukanya Sharma of Sem-VI got 1st, 2nd and 3rd consolation prizes respectively. Earlier, Dr. Mool Raj, officiating Principal congratulated and appreciated the efforts of oragnisers. He stated that such activities are need of hour in educational institutions and students should actively participate and should spread the message to general masses. In the afternoon, an awareness rally was flagged off by senior faculty of the college, Dr. Seema Sharma, Dr. Sanjeet Kour, Prof. Ashni Devi and other staff to the surrounding areas of college. The message of rally was conveyed with the help of placards and through recitation of slogans by the volunteers. The rally was escorted by Dr. Kewal Kumar, Dr. Amit Kumar, Prof Tania Mahajan, Prof. Rajinder Singh, Prof Pooja Bharti and Prof. Yash Kumar. About 30 students particiaped in the rally. The rally was culminated at Govt. Primary School, Shaktinagar, Udhampur where a plantation drive was organised by Red Ribbon Club and NSS unit of GCW Udhampur. About 15 plant saplings of some plant species including Silver Oak, Hibiscus, Night Jasmine, Bottle Brush etc. were planted by the escorted staff, RRC and NSS volunteers accompanied by Ms. Manvata, Teacher and students of GPS Shaktinagr.
